A “scan” is a quick reading, designed to help you get the “big picture” of a book. You will use these scan readings to complete 3 Scan Assignments where you document your initial impressions. The scan assignment should be 2-3, double-spaced pages that document your initial thoughts and impressions of the “big picture” of what you have read.

  • Readings of Biblical Books - Each week, read the biblical book to be discussed in the videos TWO TIMES BEFORE watching the videos. Use these readings to ready you for the Chapter Titles, Purpose, Themes assignment (see below for description of this assignment)

  • MacArthur Study Bible Introductions - Once you have completed the two readings, read the Introduction for the biblical book to be discussed in the MacArthur Study Bible. This reading should be completed by the end of the week that the biblical book is discussed

  • Support reading - You will read portions of the two required textbooks throughout the class. There are no assignments from these books, just required reading. You will report your reading progress at the end of the semester:

    • The World and the Word: An Introduction to the Old Testament: Read chs. 1-4, and chs. 10-22

    • Kingdom of Priests: A History of Old Testament Israel: read chs. 1-9

Scan Assignment: The scan assignment should be a 2-3 page, double-spaced documentation of your initial thoughts and impressions of the “big picture” of what you have read in each of your 3 “scan readings.” Due dates are listed above.

Bible Book Assignment: Once you have read a Biblical book two times, create a document that includes the following elements: 1) The purpose of the book 2) key themes 3) a title for each chapter. Due dates are listed above.

Synopsis Papers:

Each synopsis paper will require you to answer a question on one full page (8.5x12 paper, single-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman, 1” margins). Each question should be discussed in 500-700 words. Turn the papers in by the due dates listed above.
